Ecuador: Carpetas Artisticas y Las Reglas

Hola todos!

This is Katie reporting for the first time from the JUCONI office here in Guayaquil! I am really excited to be here working with both CMAP and JUCONI. With our first two weeks as co facilitators underway, Chloe and I wanted to give you an update on what’s been happening since the exhibitions and what the next month has in store for the children of Isla Trinitaria, Balerio Estacio and Nueva Prosperina.

The first week back in Club de Arte after a two week break was met with much energy from all sides. We concentrated this weeks workshop on seeing ourselves as artists and the importance and value of our work. We created ‘carpetas artisticas’ or artists portfolios. This coincided nicely with the handing back of all the participants’ pieces from the exhibitions as they now have a place to keep their 2D work.

We then looked at ‘Las Reglas de Club de Arte’ , The rules of Club de Arte. Each workshop gave the children the opportunity to collaborate on large scale banners using every colour paint imaginable!

Next week is all change again as we say buen viaje to Chloe as she sails off for a months travel in Ecuador, and at the same time we welcome back Rachel who will be co facilitating with me as we begin our first project together entitled ‘Color y Luz’ or ‘Colour and Light’. This project will involve a variety of exploration workshops including how to mix colours, using coloured transparencies to make beautiful ‘windows’ to transform the space we’re in and how we can use light as a form of art….so watch this space, I look forward to sharing more updates and images with you soon!

Animação e yoga

We are currently experiencing weather that even a hardcore Scot would call dreich! The rain has been volumous in its descent, kicking off last week with an almighty storm, fork lightning and even a power cut! Luckily ACER is still brimming with colour and sunshine and we have lots of exciting things to show you from our recently completed animation course.

Or character Torch Head continued his journey through Brazil and paid a visit to Eldorado. Using some of the brilliant photos the young people took of their surroundings we started to play around with mixing real photography and our own drawings!

We used these and the photos as a back drop for Torch Head who we brought to life as a puppet! On one adventure he encounters Mauro and Yago, two of the animation participants, doing Capoeira; a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance and music.
Capoeira is taught here at ACER Brasil and the center is often filled with the incredible sound of the teacher and children singing one of the many distinctive Capoeira songs. Please do have a wee listen to this wonderful sound. capoeiramusic

Above are some of the stills from a short animation we made of Mauro and Yago doing capoeira and meeting Torch Head along the way.

After introducing Torch Head to Capoeira and Eldorado we went back to our story boards and did a quick succession of four boards with six stills on each. The first was done in black and white, the second in colour, the third was bigger and bolder and the fourth was made up of all the best stills from the previous three.

We focused on facial expressions like the animator Gray Schwartz had suggested and drawing one item per still instead of a whole picture each time in order to better describe a story without words.

Our final animation class (blimey time is flying!) found us doing a spot of mask making. We brought animals of the Amazon to Eldorado! With Mauro and Ana dressed as Monkey and Butterfly we got up to mischief in the streets of Eldorado.

All the amazing work done by the young people has now been whisked off to Gary to be transformed into a final one min animation. We eagerly await the completion of the piece the young people at ACER Brasil have inspired and look forward to having our very own premier with popcorn and everything!
The animation class has been fantastic fun, Ana said she particularly enjoyed taking photo’s and Mauro enjoyed ‘everything!’.

In other ACER Brasil news, I am now into my third week of running yoga classes at the center. Classes are free and open to the kids, staff and the whole community. I am very privileged to be able to run these classes here and have Thiago to thank for the wonderful banner he made to put outside ACER! Muito obrigada Thiago! Here’s to stretching and um-ing our way to a more zen Eldorado!

cmap’s art auction catalogue

All funds raised by our auction will support the charity’s core programmes as well as developing the UK arm of the cmap’s work with vulnerable children and young people in London and the South East.

If you are unable to attend the auction in person you can still bid for pieces through our virtual silent auction. This is quick and easy and means that you don’t have to miss out on an opportunity to buy some amazing original pieces of art while supporting a charity at the same time.

How to do it:

Have a look at the cmap auction catalogue and if you like something, email us at auction@cmap.org.uk with the following information:

your name, the lot number, your maximum bid price, your postal address, telephone number and email address.

Or fill in the online bidding form and email or post to us. We will then send you an email to acknowledge we have received your bid.

The silent bidding finishes at 5pm on the 28th of June. If your bid was successful we will let you know within 24 hours of the auction closing.

Las Exposiciónes, Ecuador

Somehow, six months have passed since we first touched down in Guayaquil and took over the Club de Arte reigns. We´ve barely had time to think since the last post of photos on this blog; with the printing of exhibition photos, t-shirts, making of exhibition films, project evaluations and planning four separate exhibitions in the same week there has certainly been no time to think of saying farewells… So, lucky for us neither of us have to just yet! As I recall our CMAP sister Lynn once warned us ´no-one ever wants to leave´.. And so here we remain, Chloe has stepped in to partner the next Art Educator Katie until January 2013 (making Guayaquil her home for a grand total of 13 months!) and I myself will be returning for one month only so Chloe can head to the mountains for a long-overdue restbite. Today the exhibitions are behind us, the wonderful new CMAPer is with us and plans are being made for the the next project… I can reveal that it involves kaleidoscopic colour, rainbows and quite probable mahem, plus there will be more exciting colourful films being made!

So I guess you want to see what these exhibitions looked like? We kicked off on monday with the first community exhibition in Isla Trinitaria… as always in Isla, we had a great turn out and before long there was much music and dancing, the group especially loved showcasing their ´t-shirts for advocacy´in an adhoc catwalk show!

On Wednesday we held the Balerio Estacio exhibition in the brilliant new Club de Arte location of ‘Transito Amaguaña’ highschool. It´s a busy school and lots of students and teachers came to admire the Club de Arte exhibition and to watch the films we showed in the auditorium.

Thursday was our Nueva Prosperina exhibition, again with a great presence of friends and family. The event was led by the wonderful Pablo, and there was much laughter and applause as we played games and congratulated the kids on their achievements.

Fiiinnnallllly come Friday we had the big day – we had invited all 70 art club kids and their families, from 3 sectors of the city, to come together for a grand exhibition in the Museum Nahaim Isais in the centre of Guayaquil, where the kids had a chance to show their families their work, meet other art club kids and see each others work.

Huge thanks go to the incredible JUCONI team who made it all possible – as always they were amazingly supportive and enthusiastic about the event, giving their time to help organise and man the buses, provide the great speeches and congratulate the kids, and generally keeping order on the day when everyone was palpably excited! We had music provided by a great Marimba band lead by Steven (a Juconi graduate and friend of art club), and also Shirley (a Juconi volunteer) who played and sang sing-a-long classics that the kids loved. And then of course was the main event, showcasing 70 photos taken by the kids of art club, 70 t-shirts presenting the opinions of each individual and raising awareness of the things they want to help, or want to celebrate within their communities, the massive Pirate murals and props from the play finally all displayed together in one great installation, and of course the films made during each project; the pirate play, the puppet dance, drawing movement, and a slideshow of fotos del proyecto nuestro medio ambiente/photos from the project ´our environment´….
